Lorem Ipsum for All

Lorem IpsumThe phrase “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetuer” is a common textual place holder used to demonstrate the graphic elements of a document, font or design layout. While the phrase appears to have the styling of a classic Latin passage it is actually nonsense.

Even though the phrase is nonsense, it has a long history and is not simply random text. During the 1500s, an unknown printer took a passage of latin text and scrambled it to develop a type specimen book. Surviving the last five centuries, the phrase has become the printing industries defacto fake or dummy text. It is used by typographers and printers to demonstrate the distinctive features of their typefaces and print layouts. The phrase more-or-less approximates the normal distribution of letters found in printed language giving a visual feel of the layout without distraction of the text having true meaning.

The text is far from random. Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar who is the publications director at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, found the source by searching for the obscure word ‘consectetur’ in classic literature. The text is from a famous source. And that source - Cicero’s de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (On the Ends of Goods and Evils, or alternatively [About] The Purposes of Good and Evil ) a discussion of the facts and theory of ethics written in 45 BC. The original passage began: Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit… Translated it means - “There is no one who loves pain [grief] itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain [grief]…”.

The current standard “Lorem Ipsum” text reads as follows:

It is unknown when the text gained it’s current standard form. It could be as early as the 1960s as the locator of the passage can only find mention as far back as the popular Letraset press-type sheets used to aid in print layouts.

The original version (with the excerpted items highlighted):

[32] Sed ut perspiciatis, unde omnis iste natus error sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium, totam rem aperiam eaque ipsa, quae ab illo inventore veritatis et quasi architecto beatae vitae dicta sunt, explicabo. Itaque earum rerum hic tenetur a sapiente delectus, ut aut reiciendis voluptatibus maiores alias consequatur aut perferendis doloribus asperiores repellat.

English Translation by H. Rackham (1914):

[32]“But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?”

[33] “On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain. These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammelled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure is to be welcomed and every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances accepted. The wise man therefore always holds in these matters to this principle of selection: he rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains.”
